Preparation for the study

General

The test material is blood.
The patient must be fasting, at least 12 hours after eating the last meal, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor (e.g., performing the test after a meal)

Detailed for infants

For children under 3 years of age, it is recommended to draw blood from half to one hour after feeding.

Description

Amylase is a component of saliva and gastric juices, it breaks down complex sugars (starch and glycogen) into simple sugars. With damage to the pancreas, salivary glands in an inflammatory process or stasis, amylase enters the blood and its elevated serum concentration can be found.

Importance of the test: insightful search for the cause of "unclear" abdominal pain, diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas and salivary glands.

Abnormal values of amylase: in diseases of the pancreas and salivary glands, in bile stasis, in kidney diseases.
