Cytomegalovirus is a virus in the herpes family that can cause serious illness in both children and adults. CMV lives in the human body for many years and can be transmitted to others. Infection with the virus is quite common, 60 to 85% of the population has been infected but in most cases it is asymptomatic. 1 to 3% of women become infected during pregnancy of which 1 - 2 cases are transmitted to the fetus. The infection is most often asymptomatic, but in about 5% of cases the consequences can be very dangerous: hepatosplenomegaly, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, prematurity. Often fetal death occurs. Even in cases of asymptomatic infection, about 10% of children present severe sensory symptoms such as deafness or partial or even total blindness. Detection of anti-CMV antibodies in the IgG class can be useful in estimating a patient's immunoserological status.
