Description

The human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) is one of the most widespread parasites in the world. Humans are the main hosts of these parasites, with children being more frequent hosts than adults. Parasite infestation is most often followed by the development of roundworm, progressing usually latently. Migrating larvae can lead to the development of inflammation and penetrate the lungs, causing coughing, shortness of breath and high temperature. Conglomerates of roundworms can lead to intestinal obstruction. If roundworms migrate to the bile, pancreas or stomach, characteristic clinical symptoms will appear. About 1- 12 weeks after parasite infestation, roundworms are excreted in the feces. Mature roundworms live about 18 months.

Infection can be diagnosed:

- by microscopic examination - detecting roundworm eggs in the feces.

- serologically: by detecting antibodies in the ELISA method.
