Description

Autoantibodies against pancreatic islets are detected in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type I). It is a chronic disorder of endocrine function of the pancreas.Diabetes of autoimmune origin leads to the destruction of insulin-producing B cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans.

At the beginning of the disease, antibodies against the islets of the pancreas are found in about 90% of patients. These antibodies can be detected even before the onset of symptoms of the early phase of the disease, but do not necessarily occur later. As diabetes progresses, antibody titers decrease.

Antibodies to intestinal tubular cells are found in about 30% of patients with ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa). The disease usually runs in bouts. The leading symptom is bloody and purulent diarrhea.
