Description

Determination of autoantibodies against bile ducts, by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF), is the second most specific test used in the diagnosis of primary biliary cirrhosis. Primary biliary cirrhosis, or PBC, is manifested by damage to the internal bile ducts, which leads to cholestasis. This is followed by inflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Anti-mitochondrial autoantibodies, AMA (anti-mitochondrial antibodies), are involved in the pathomechanism. Determination of AMA type 2 antibodies shows the highest specificity for PBC reaching up to 95% of cases, the determination of anti-mitochondrial antibodies, with a specificity of 75%, is the second most specific test in the diagnosis of PBC.
